From the monthly archives: "March 2013"

So remember that time when NBC gave Jay Leno the boot and brought in Conan O’Brien? Remember how long that lasted? And how they had to buy Conan out of his contract? That worked out well for them and we all know that Leno came back and is still on the air. For now. Because if you haven’t heard, next year Jimmy Fallon is taking over the Late Show.

Now, this doesn’t really have anything to do with ratings, unless NBC isn’t thrilled with having the number one show in the time slot. So let’s talk about Leno as a teenage girl for a second. Can you imagine how devastating/upsetting/annoying/angering it would be to be fired from your late night duties not just once BUT twice, in favor of someone else. Granted, technically he isn’t being fired because his contract will be up, but I would imagine your self-esteem has to take some sort of hit here. Maybe he is used to it because he’s been in the business for a long time and he’s getting older and generally that is what happens in the biz. But, being replaced even when you have the number one slot has to sting.

Leno is only 62 so if he was going to the Carson route, he still has 4 years before stepping down. But, obviously this is not really a choice of stepping down as much as it is being dethroned if you will.  It’s the entertainment business and they love them a younger, fresher face (and if I am being honest I had a huge crush on Fallon back when he was on SNL, even though he couldn’t make it through an entire skit without breaking character and laughing. But he was just so charming). Speaking of Carson, Lorne Michaels had this to say about Fallon, “He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation”. Quite the compliment. Maybe NBC will get it right this time.

(Sorry for the terrible quality, but this is my favorite Fallon skit and a perfect example of him not being able to maintain character)

By the way, the network has NOT confirmed the switch up. Seth Meyers is also reportedly first in line to take over for Fallon. We shall see in due time.

Justin Bieber has nothing on you! (He was discovered on Youtube in case you didn’t know or didn’t fully believe in the potential of the website) Simon Cowell, the guy from America’s Got Talent, X Factor, American Idol, every other competition show on the face of the planet, is looking for the next big thing.

(Here is Simon looking very Glamour Shots with his famous skin tight black shirt)

So you don’t sing. Doesn’t matter. You can show off any of your skills; cooking, dancing, singing, reading backwards. For the next 12 months, starting March 20th,  they are going to launch a channel called the You Generation where you can show off your super awesome skills.

“Every submission will be judged by Syco executives and experts in the relevant field,” YouTube said in a statement. “Finalists will be chosen every two weeks with the winner being announced on the second Friday of every contest.”

The cool part is, each winner gets a cash prize and then the go into the final competition for a grand prize. There are different categories for you to enter in and to audition you just go to the channel and upload your video in the corresponding category.

So what are you waiting for?! Go get Youtube famous and maybe even WORLD FAMOUS! Check out the video below for a summary/preview of the channel.

And by week I mean year. Seriously, 2013 is going to be the year of JT (hopefully that rubs off on me since we have the same initials) and it is only March. Not even a full 3 months into the year and the hooplah over Justin is ridiculous. He will have to do something insane to wreck this for himself. I think at this point, even if his album flops, that’ll still be press that works in his favor.

So let’s review why JT is having the best year ever:

He got to debut his new single “Suit and Tie “with arguably the biggest rapper around, Jay-Z, at the GRAMMYs, and in black and white (obviously for TV purposes only. He doesn’t have THAT much power…or does he?)

Next, he hosted SNL this past weekend for the 5th time, and to make sure that it went well, since they heavily promoted it, they brought out the big guns. Chevy Chase, Alec Baldwin, Dan Aykroyd, and Steve Martin all made appearances. In fact, Dan and Steve reprise their roles as a couple of wild and crazy guys in the Dating Game skit. I for one have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Justin’s acting chops. He was alright in the Social Network, but whenever he tries to do the RomCom thing it seems forced. I felt the same way about his monologue. However, the Vegan-Ville skit was right on the money.

(There are a view curse words because it is SNL afterall)

I will now have the Harlem shake stuck in my head all day, which is the worst since there are not many words and it makes me want to flail around like a fish out of water. Annnnnnnd I’m listening to it as I write this. Thanks, JT.

What else is Justin doing this week? Oh you know, just hanging out with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night EVERY NIGHT. But, no one seems to mind. Is there anyone else that has been able to go from Disney to a super famous boy band to actor to ruler of the world? I can’t think of one. But the ladies love JT for obvious reasons (I mean he did bring sexy back. You thought I could go through a whole post without saying that?) and dudes want to hang out with him and have him as a wing man.

Like I said, there are 9 more months left of 2013. Let’s see what else Justin Timberlake has up his sleeves.

So my new goal is to start a Youtube series. I have no idea what it will be about, or for that matter how to even make that happen. But, if YOU do we should totally team up and create a pilot that is so awesome a network (or someone with lots of moolah) will fund us to make great content that will air via Netflix or Youtube. Then we can be internet superstars!

But even more than that, we could win an Emmy. You know you’ve always wanted to display an Emmy in your bathroom. Way back in 2008 (yes, it’s already been 5 years since 2008) the Academy decided that shows that were not on traditional channels and not regularly scheduled could take home an award. However, this was 5 years ago and it hasn’t made much of a difference. It did, however, take 6 years before a show on cable actually won after the rules were changed in 1988.

I guess most shows that are on Youtube aren’t technically long enough to win most awards. To be completely honest, I have never watched a series on Youtube or the ONE that I know about that is on Netflix, House of Cards. The only reason I know about the latter is because every time I watch something on Netflix they play the trailer afterwards. Apparently the show is pretty good and gaining buzz, as is the return season of Arrested Development (which I am prettttttttttty excited about!).

Just in case you don’t have Netflix and aren’t privy to their excellent marketing strategies…

However, there a few that could potentially lean towards which are the “Short Format Live-Action Entertainment Program” and “Short Format Nonfiction Program”. There are networked shows that can fall in this category though.

Also, you have to pay some Benjamins to be considered for an award, but honestly, $600-$700 ain’t that bad if you believe you have some quality content worth of acclaim.

Now, content has to have aired by May 31 of this year to be considered for an Emmy, so that means YOU need to hurry up and come up with a stellar idea, a way to make the show, and $700 so that I can attach my name on the project and we can win an Emmy!
